AIRES

Full title: Innovation in Energy Storage and Intelligent Energy Management for Renewable Self-Consumption Installations
Acronym: AIRES
Call: 6th Call of the Interreg VI-A Spain–Portugal Programme (POCTEP) 2021–2027 (Project Code: 0499_AIRES_4_E)
Duration: Start date: 01/10/2025 – End date: 31/12/2028
Total project budget: €1,458,169.86
Partnership: The AIRES project is coordinated by AGENEX and brings together nine additional organisations from Spain and Portugal: the University of Extremadura, the Iberian Centre for Energy Storage Research (CIIAE), the University of Évora, the Polytechnic Institute of Portalegre, the Provincial Council of Badajoz, Aspremetal, the Commercial and Industrial Association of Puente del Sur (ACIPS), the Business Hub of the Évora Region (NERE), and the Regional Energy and Environment Agency of Northern Alentejo and Tagus Valley (AREANATejo).
Project Description
The AIRES project aims to promote innovation in the field of energy storage and optimise the management of renewable energy systems for self-consumption across the Spain–Portugal cross-border area.
To achieve this objective, the project will carry out joint research activities focused on analysing the state of the art of energy storage technologies and identifying advanced energy management solutions. Building on this knowledge, real-life application scenarios will be defined, in which innovative systems will be designed, sized, and implemented. These solutions will be validated through two pilot initiatives: one based on electrical battery storage, to be deployed in the Province of Badajoz, and another focused on hydrogen production and storage, to be implemented in Portugal.
In addition, the project will develop an artificial intelligence-based digital energy management tool capable of optimising energy consumption according to variables such as weather conditions and electricity prices in the Iberian energy market.
AIRES also includes knowledge transfer activities aimed at the business sector through training actions and enhanced collaboration between companies and research centres. In doing so, the project will contribute to the creation of an innovation ecosystem focused on energy storage technologies and solutions.
