39% of the energy produced in Extremadura is already of renewable origin
The Extremadura 2022 Electricity Power Balance Report ratifies that regional electricity production exceeds demand by 560,85€ %, being the surplus generation a 81,9% of the total power generation.
The total installed power in the region reached a record high of 10,585 MW in 2022, thanks to the new commissioning of 1,481 MW in PV power, taking the installed PV total to 5,348 MW. An 81% of the total installed power corresponds to renewable generation plants.
The leading technology is clearly photovoltaic solar power, which represents 50,53 percent of the regional installed total power, which in turn represents a 27% of the national photovoltaic power generation capacities. This fact places Extremadura as the first region in Spain covering its total demand by an excess of 217%, only with the generation of renewable energy sources (being the total energy generation the already-mentioned 560,86% over the regional demand). In turn, PV generation alone covers a 148 percent of the regional electricity demand.
Regarding the amount of generated of electrical energy, Extremadura reached 26,251 GWh, 6.33% more than in 2021, constituting a new all-time high. This increase in electricity generation stems from both the year-on-year increase of 8,29% in renewable energy production (reaching 10.163 GWh) and the increase in other non-renewable energy generation, which grew by a 5,16% (reaching 16.088 GWh).
Demand for electricity, in line with the Spanish national trends, experienced in the region a 7.41% year-on-year fall, amounting to 4,681 GWh.
Increase in renewable generation
Regarding the regional 8,29 % RES growth generation, it clearly reflects the large increase in PV generation, amounting to 40,8%, largely compensating decreases in other relevant RES sources, especially the case of hydro-power (-43%), due to low rainfall.
On the other hand, it is worth noting the production of electrical energy with solar-based technologies (photovoltaic and solar thermal), representing a 182,45 % of the regional demand.
Extremadura continues to be the national leader in photovoltaic solar generation in Spain, with a production in 2022 of 6,954 GWh, representing a 24.92% of the national total (the regional share of RES generation now reaches a 38,71% of the total generated RES power). One in every three new installed MW of PV power in Spain in 2022 was commissioned in Extremadura.
Energy self-consumption development
In addition, 2022 stands out for the intense expansion of Energy self-consumption, with a growth of 345% over the previous year. 5,275 new installations were registered, with a total capacity of 45,9 MW. Among these, 4,784 were installed in private housing facilities, 419 in company buildings and 72 were installed on public administration buildings.
Currently, there are a total of 10,500 self-consumption installations for a total power generating capacity exceeding 106 MW.
Summing up
Overall, 81 percent of the installed power in Extremadura corresponds to renewable electricity generation plants and 39% of the energy produced comes from renewable sources.
Extremadura is currently the first region of Spain in installed photovoltaic power, the second in solar thermal and third in hydraulics.
