Extremadura will update this year the Integrated Regional Energy Plan to provide greater coverage for self-consumption and green hydrogen.

Extremadura is committed to establishing itself definitively in a sustainable industrial scenario, laying the foundations for its future on "the combination of energy and industrial development".
In 2022, the region once again set records for installed power and investment, results that respond to the programming included in the Extremadura Integrated Energy Plan. Given this evolution, the plan will be updated throughout 2023 to accommodate more ambitious objectives in areas such as self-consumption and green hydrogen.
Last year, more than 5,000 self-consumption installations by individuals and more than 450 self-generation installations in companies were legalized, with an installed power of more than 20 MW, as a way for reducing energy costs in their businesses.
According to data provided by the Ministry for the Energy Transition and Sustainability, there are numerous business projects that Extremadura has on the table that will promote fruitful public-private collaboration in strategic infrastructure for the transport of the electricity grid and renewable gases.
These projects are establishing a strong industrial value chain in the region, including the energy sector, according to its head, Olga García, who assumes and promotes this work as facilitators from the Extremadura Regional Government, developing "a regulatory framework that guides investment strategies and provides certainty to this industrial development."
On the top of this, Extremadura has developed now laws regulating the use of lithium and the production of green hydrogen, declaring both to be of general interest.
In the face of the energy crisis, Extremadura is fulfilling Europe's priority to accelerate the implementation of renewables, with a greater variety of renewables, avoiding bureaucratic obstacles and respecting environmental procedures. According to the regional minister, "Extremadura's commitment is to definitively position the region in a sustainable industrial scenario as our future will only be fueled by green energy sources."
