Extremadura continues to lead the development of PV energy in Spain.

One third of the installed PV power in Spain is situated in Extremadura. Throughout 2022, 23 facilities were implemented and commissioned in the region (14 in the province of Badajoz and 9 in the province of Cáceres) counting with a total of 1,298 megawatts (MW), representing a 34% of the national installed power.
Additionally, the Spanish Electric Transport utility (Red Eléctrica Española) expects that in year 2022, another 8 new installations will be commissioned as well, with an additional authorized power of 165,3 MW.
With these figures, Extremadura exceeds the annual objective of putting into service around 1.000 MW, being a well-known location for private renewable energy investment in Spain.
Currently, photovoltaic power exceeds hydraulic and nuclear power, with a total 5,165 MW, which consolidates the status of PV energy as the first source of clean energy in Extremadura.
Regional PV power production currently stems from 186 PV plants in 93 municipalities. These plants cover a total 14,492 hectares, which barely represents a 0.36% of the regional territory, according to data from the Regional Ministry for Ecological Transition and Sustainability, as its head, Ms. Olga García, had also stated.
Self-consumption
Energy self-consumption is also becoming increasingly relevant, with 5,275 new installations commissioned in 2022. A majority of these new installations, 4.784, correspond to individuals, while only 419 have been installed in companies and 72 in public administrations. Therefore, the region has now 7,052 energy self-consumption facilities that add up 75 MW to the total regional PV capacities.
These developments have had a positive impact on regional employment rates, implying that "the volume of work has increased notably in many regional SMEs, in addition to the industrial value chain growth that PV generation is now creating in Extremadura”, as the regional minister also brought forward.
The minister has also advanced that throughout 2023 the installed power from wind energy and biomass will double, with 59,5 MW for wind power, and a further 49 MW for biomass at the newly created Logrosán plant.
